Incredible floral Easter bonnet: step-by-step guide

This gorgeous Easter bonnet with giant tissue paper flowers has all the feels of Spring. Follow our step-by-step guide to how to create it

homemade floral easter bonnet

This beautiful floral Easter bonnet, made mainly with tissue paper to create oversized flowers, is pretty as a picture and perfect if you want something a bit different from the classic bunny and chick Easter bonnets (though we love those too!).

If you want a really fresh look, you can swap out the paper flowers for real flowers. You’ll see in our photos that we’ve used daffodils but you can choose whatever flowers you can find in your garden, windowbox or supermarket.

Huge (Easter) hat tip to our parent tester and photographer Abigail Walker, from our Facebook community for testing this Easter Bonnet craft with her daughter May, and demonstrating how easy it is to make with her lovely photos …

Floral Easter bonnet: how to make it, step by step

You Will Need

  • Hat
  • Lots of tissue paper (various colours)
  • Pencil
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Glue or double-sided sticky tape
  • Buttons or pompoms
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon

Total time:

Step 1

Start making the flowers by cutting or ripping the tissue paper into roughly hand-sized pieces. Use a pencil to pierce the centre of the tissue-paper pieces, then stack them up, layering the colours until you have about 15 paper squares in your stack.

Step 2

Take out the pencil and thread a pipe cleaner into the hole and secure it by bending and twisting both ends to keep them tight.

Step 3

Use glue or double-sided tape to stick a button or pompom on top of the pipe cleaner on one side. Then scrunch the tissue paper up on that side to make it look more flower-petal-like. Repeat until you have enough flowers to decorate your hat.

Step 4

Secure a whole sheet of tissue paper to the hat with glue or double-sided tape. Trim the edges with scissors so it looks ‘floaty’. Tie a ribbon around the hat with a beautiful bow at the back, and use glue or double-sided tape to keep it in place.

Step 5

Put glue or double-sided tape on the bottom of your flowers and stick them all over your hat.

Step 6

If you fancy it, you can try using real flowers between your paper ones.
